Dragons Fall Behind, Gems Set Dragons Ablaze in 5-1 Loss

Thursday July 2, 2009
Quincy, IL
Tim Wealton

After a disheartening 9-6 loss to Butler at home on Wednesday, the
Dupage Dragons hit the road, looking for a win at West Division
leading Quincy Thursday night.  Manager Mark Viramontes would look for
a more solid outing from starting pitcher Casey Webber, (Tinley Park,
IL/Western Michigan University), than he has received from the rest of
his staff in the past few games.

Things were not looking good for the Dragons through two, as Webber
walked five, loading the bases twice.  He was however able to get out
of the jams minimizing the damage, but not before an RBI-single put
the Gems up 1-0.

The Dragons were able to get a baserunner in scoring position, after
Sean Flanagan, (Downers Grove, IL/Iowa), singled, two sacrifices, a
bunt and a fly respectively.  Nothing came of it however, with a
pop-out from Brian Martin, (Glen Ellyn, IL, College of Dupage), ended
the inning.

Webber would get back on track, and retire 14 batters in a row, before
an RBI-single from John Myers put the Gems back ahead 2-0.  Will
Strack, (Sycamore, IL/University of Illinois), would come in the game
with runners on the corners and hit a batter to load the bases.  An
run would then score on the error charged to Sean Flanagan, after he
didn't make the throw to first, and flipped it to an uncovered second
base, which allowed the runner to slide in safely.  Strack would then
bean another batter, Lorenz, loading the bases, before getting a
ground out to end the inning.  The score through seven innings, Gems
5, Dragons 1.

Strack would run into trouble again in the 8th, allowing a single and
a walk to start things off, but a nice unassisted double play from
Greg Stolzenburg, (St. Charles, IL/Elgin Community College), got the
Dragons out of the inning.

After putting runners at first and second, the Dragons couldn't pull
off the comeback with Grant Filipitch, (LaGrange Park, IL/Butler),
grounding into a game ending double play.

The Dragons travel to Hannibal to take on the Cavemen tomorrow night.
