June 1, 2008 | LISLE, IL With the start of the College World Series just around the corner, the DuPage Dragons would like extend a congratulations to all the teams that made the tournament. Of those teams in the tournament, the Dragons have players attending Louisville, University of Illinois-Chicago, and Eastern Illinois. The Dragons will also be without their head coach, Mark Viramontes, who is an assistant coach at The University of San Diego.
Phil Wunderlich, a freshman at Louisville, will be taking part in his first College World Series. This season he appeared in 50 games and finished the season with a .262 batting average. He had 37 hits with 9 doubles and 19 RBI’s. Louisville begins their road to the College World Series against Georgia Tech on Friday May 30th at 7 p.m.
Jordan Tokarz, a junior at Eastern Illinois, joins the upstart Panthers after two years at Elgin Community College. This past regular season he appeared in 55 games and had a batting average of .293. He amassed 65 hits and finished with 42 RBI’s. Eastern Illinois opens up regional play against Nebraska on Friday May 30th at 2 p.m.
A triumvirate of players from UIC will be taking part in the 2008 College World Series. For Jake Carr, a senior, this will be his last chance to make a run at a College World Series championship. But for Brad Reigler, a junior, and Eric Wyman, a freshman, there is still next year and more to come. Carr finished his regular season by appearing in 48 games and posting a .330 batting average. He scored 41 runs and had 62 hits. Reigler ended his season with a 6.10 ERA, but finished with a perfect record of 4 wins and 0 losses. Wyman finished with a record of 1-1 in 14 appearances. He also sported a 4.37 ERA. UIC will begin their College World Series against Texas A&M on Friday May 30th at 7:30 p.m.
The Dragons will begin the season without the man they hope will guide the team to its first CICL championship, coach Mark Viramontes. During the college baseball season, Viramontes serves as an assistant coach for the University of San Diego. In his first season with the Dragons he led them to their best record in franchise history, 25-19. Last season he led the Dragons to the CICL Championship game. San Diego will open the tournament on Friday May 30th at 2 p.m. against California.
